Fan Influenced Digital Remake

Case Study: Ghost in the Shell

Five years ago the movie called Ghost in the Shell, which was a live action remake of the Japanese franchise, released and received a huge backlash due to the fact that they casted an Asian character with a White woman, also known as Scarlett Johansson.

Ghost in the Shell was released in the 29th of March 2017. Despite them having a star actor playing the role of the main character in the movie, it was eventually hit with lots of critics.

The failure of the movie changed Hollywood forever. It brought up the the industries racist tradition of whitewashing casting where the roles of minority characters would be played by white people. This incident has led to the potent warning of racist practices in the film industry.

An article from Inverse says that after Scarlett Johansson happened, fans of Ghost in the Shell began to stop and take action regarding whitewashing in casting. They started to complain and demanded the industry to make a change. At some point, these critics and complains over the casting of Scarlett made Hollywood actually push things to a ridiculous level by using CGI to make here face look more 'Asian'.

This change was influenced by the fans of the Ghost in the Shell franchise and this goes to show how the fandom is able to affect the media in a heavy way.
