Post-Colonialism in Modern Media
Post-Colonialism. What I believe this means is that it is how people tend to base their thoughts and beliefs towards superior and inferior groups off of media texts that represent the more superior group of people such as the British to be more powerful and civilized as compared to the 'other' ethnic groups.
In todays class, we tried to analyze two different media texts that can be seen to use the theory of Post-Colonialism. The first show 'The Crown' represents the British people in a really formal and polite way. They are seen to be more superior and developed as compared to the natives. The natives are also shown to be supporting them in a way that almost looks like they are worshipping the British.
The second show 'The Kingsman' represents the British in a slightly different way. They are shown to be elite, skilled, serious, clean, and white. This is because the British wants the majority of people to view them as the more superior group of people.
Can you think of any modern examples that conform with postcolonial ideologies?
How do modern media texts subvert traditional representations from postcolonialism?
